Memorial of Saint Ignatius of Loyola

Founder of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), he was born in 1491 in northern Spain. An army officer, he left the army to enlist in the service of Christ. He was ordained a priest in Venice in 1537 and fell asleep in the Lord on July 31, 1556. He was canonized in 1622. He was known for his apostolic zeal for the salvation of souls and his complete obedience to the Church. His writings, especially his Spiritual Exercises, are still used today for retreats and spiritual direction.

May his prayer be with us.

Amen.
