Sayings of Saint John Chrysostom

  • Prayer is the source and foundation of countless blessings; it is extremely powerful… Prayer is the prelude to joy.

– A person should constantly repeat the prayer:
“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner”
whether working, walking, eating or resting, until the name of our Lord Jesus Christ sinks into the depths of the heart and crushes the pride of the old serpent lurking within, to revive the soul. So keep repeating the name of the Lord Jesus without ceasing, until your heart embraces it and the two become one.

– May we profit from understanding how necessary prayer is, and realize that to abandon it is to lose the life of the soul, for the two are one and cannot be separated.

– “Sanctify them in the truth” means “make them holy by the gift of the Spirit and by true teaching”. Just as when he said:
“You are already made clean by the word which I have spoken to you”
(John 15:3), so now he says the same: “Guide them, teach them the truth”… For speaking right teaching about God sanctifies the soul. And when he says they are sanctified by the word, it does not depend on wondrous works… since he knows that the word of God also purifies.
But the words “sanctify them” also seem to me to declare something else of the same kind: “Set them apart for the word and for preaching.” This is clear from what comes after.

– Stillness is the companion of asceticism; stillness gives the heart constant solitude.

– Whoever does not pray has nothing good at all in his life.

– You long to see his garments, but he gives you himself, not only to see him but to touch him, eat him and receive him within you.

– When you pray, sign your forehead with the cross, and then the demons will not come near you, because you are armed against them.

– Prayer is a great weapon and an inexhaustible treasure.

– If you do not want sorrow to come to you, do not cause sorrow to anyone.

– Love is the passport by which a person passes through all the gates of heaven without hindrance.
