The Silence of Saint Joseph
(Pope Benedict XVI)
The month of March is dedicated to devotion to Saint Joseph, that silent and steadfast figure who served the Lord with humility, love, silence and contemplation.
“The silence of Saint Joseph is a silence marked by contemplation of the mystery of God, in an attitude of complete surrender to the divine will.
In other words, Saint Joseph’s silence does not reveal an inner emptiness but, on the contrary, the fullness of faith that he carries in his heart and that guides all his thoughts and all his actions.
It is a silence through which Joseph, together with Mary, keeps the Word of God, known through the Holy Scriptures, constantly comparing it with the events of the life of Jesus; a silence woven of constant prayer, a prayer that blesses the Lord, adores his holy will and trusts completely in his providence.
Let us be ‘infected’ by Saint Joseph’s silence! We need it so much, in a world that is often too noisy and does not encourage recollection or listening to the voice of God.”
