The Letter M on the Medal
On the back of the medal I find symbolic signs, first of all the initial of the blessed name of Mary: the letter M, which seems to serve as the base of the Cross of Jesus.
Mary is inseparable from her Son. I must bring her into the heart of my life, so that she helps me carry my burdens.
May her name be engraved in my heart, always present in my memory, always ready to spring from my lips, and may the words of Saint Bernard be imprinted on my mind: “If temptations assail you, if doubts torment you, if hardships overwhelm you, look to the star, call upon Mary!”
M – Does Mary have a place in my personal, inner life?
M – Is she more than a statue to me? Is she not rather a living person, always ready to
welcome me, listen to me and answer me?
The Novena to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal
“Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, you who chose to appear to Saint Catherine Labouré as mediatrix between God and mankind, hear me, I implore you.
I place into your motherly hands all my intentions and concerns, spiritual and temporal; I entrust to you the grace I dare to ask of your tenderness, and I humbly beg you to present it to your divine Son and ask Him to grant it, if the grace I ask is truly in keeping with His will and for the good of my soul.
And having raised your pleading hands to the Lord, be pleased, O powerful Virgin, to lower them over me and flood me with the rays of your graces, so that my soul, in the light and warmth of these rays, may be freed from the things of this world, be purified and walk in your footsteps until the day you welcome me at the gate of heaven. Amen.”
