Saint John Maron the Confessor, Celebrated on March 2

John Maron was born in the village of Sarum, near Antioch, to believing parents. He received an excellent education and then entered the Monastery of Saint Maron on the banks of the Orontes. He took the monastic habit, was raised to the priesthood and was given the name Maron. The papal legate John of Philadelphia consecrated him Bishop of Mount Lebanon in 676.

He came to Lebanon bringing with him the head of Saint Maron and settled in the region of Kfarhay, where the monastery bears his name. The leaders of Mount Lebanon gathered and chose John Maron as Patriarch of the Maronites in 685. When plague broke out in his region, he visited the sick and healed them through his prayer. He fell asleep in the Lord on March 2, 707. An anaphora of the Mass is known by his name… May his prayer be with us.
