The Feast of Christ the King

The Feast of Christ the King

The feast of Christ the King was instituted by Pope Pius XI on 11 December 1925, in the encyclical Quas primas. After the horrors of the First World War, the Church wanted to remind us that Jesus is the one true King, “King of kings and Lord of lords” (Revelation 19:16). The feast was first set on the last Sunday of October; since the liturgical reform of 1969, the Roman Rite celebrates it on the last Sunday of the liturgical year, just before Advent.

“The kings of the earth send their servants to death to save their own lives; but Jesus died to redeem us.”
Blessed Abouna Yaacoub of Ghazir, Capuchin

Prayer to Christ the King
O Christ Jesus, I acknowledge you as King of the universe. All that has been created has been made for you. Exercise upon me all your rights. I renew my baptismal promises, renouncing Satan and all his pomps and works. I promise to live a good Christian life, and in particular I pledge to do all in my power to make the rights of God and of your Church triumph.

Divine Heart of Jesus,
I offer you my thoughts and my actions, so that all hearts may acknowledge your sacred kingship, and so your peace may be established throughout the whole world. Amen.

Rita, of the Sawt el Rab team
