Sayings of Saint Isaac the Syrian

Prayer is conversation with God.

Whoever neglects prayer and thinks he has another door to repentance is deceived by the demons.

Do you not understand, wretched man, before whom you are standing when you pray?

Love chastity, so that you may not be put to shame before God in prayer.

A person who holds a grudge gains as much from his prayer as a farmer reaps from sowing in the sea.

Through prayer we draw grace to ourselves, and when we feel it, we forget the earth and everything in it.

Without constant prayer we cannot draw near to God. Just as a frightened child clings to the hem of its parents’ clothes, so the soul, whenever it is in distress, takes refuge in God through prayer.

Nothing purifies the conscience like persevering prayer.

Great is the power of the prayer of the righteous.

The prayer of one who holds a grudge is like seed falling on rock.

Pray that the angel of chastity may not depart from you.

If you keep company with wolves, you will learn to howl; if you befriend eagles, you will learn to soar. Choose a spiritual friend who will soar with you toward Christ.

Before the fall comes pride; before gifts comes humility.

The devil cannot come near a person or bring him temptations unless God allows it because of our negligence.

Fear pride, and you will become great.

The passions are overcome only by humility.

It was through the lust of the eyes that Adam lost his inheritance.

Guarding the senses cuts off sins.

A person cannot reach perfection in the fear of God except by abandoning all evil and cutting off every sin.

Why was a whole generation drowned in the flood in the days of Noah? Was it not because of debauchery?

Why do you hate the sinner, O man? Do you think he is not righteous as you are?

Do not hate the sinner, but hate his sins, and pray for him in imitation of Christ.

Do not hate the sinner, for we are all sinners; and if, moved by God, you feel pity for him, weep for him.

There is no sin without forgiveness, except the one without repentance.

Whoever hates his sins stops committing them, and whoever confesses them receives forgiveness.

Look deeply into your sin, and you will find there steps by which you can climb upward.

Repentance is leaving evil things behind and regretting them.

Repentance is the mother of life.

Repentance ends only with death.

When repentance dwells in a person, it fills the soul with sorrow and joy: sorrow for past faults and joy for the good things to come.
