The Ecstasies of Myrna Akhras at Soufanieh

The ecstasies

Up to 26 November 1990 there were thirty-three, eight of them outside Damascus:

  • an ecstasy at the Melkite Greek Catholic archbishop’s residence in Khabab, sixty kilometres south of Damascus, in the presence of Archbishop Boulos Borkhoche; no message came with it;
  • an ecstasy at the Syriac Orthodox cathedral in Hasakah, more than 600 kilometres north-east of Damascus (with a message);
  • three ecstasies in Maad, Lebanon, one of them in a village church (two messages);
  • two ecstasies in Los Angeles, USA (two messages);
  • one ecstasy in Brasschaat, Belgium (one message).

In general, during these ecstasies Myrna sees the Virgin or Jesus.

The ecstasy is often preceded by oil flowing from her hands, face or neck. When she is about to see Christ, oil also flows from her eyes, which causes her a burning sensation before she enters the ecstasy. Then comes the ecstasy itself, a state of detachment from the outside world: during this phase Myrna sees nothing, hears nothing, feels nothing, and her body is rigid. She sees Christ as a being of light, without being able to make out his features, unlike when she sees the Virgin.

When she returns to her normal state after seeing Christ, she needs some time to recover her normal sight: the inner light keeps her from seeing anything. She remained in this state for seventy-two consecutive hours, from 26 to 29 November 1984. During her ecstasies she was often surrounded by one to four doctors, who carried out a number of tests on her, especially of her sight, sensation and reflexes; all of them proved negative. Apart from the first two ecstasies, on Monday 24 October 1983, whose length was not measured, the others lasted between five and seventy-five minutes. Most of these ecstasies were filmed on video.

Most of these ecstasies were accompanied by messages summing up, in condensed form, the great Christian truths:

  • the Holy Trinity – creation – the Incarnation;
  • the fatherhood of God – the mediation of Mary;
  • meriting heaven – returning to the Lord;
  • the need for constant prayer and fasting;
  • the holiness of marriage;
  • an urgent call to the unity of the Church;
  • the role of lay people in building unity.
