Saint Denis
According to tradition, Saint Denis came from Italy. He was sent from Rome to the West and became the first Bishop of Paris.
Around the year 250, he set out on a mission to evangelize Gaul, present-day France. He was accompanied by Rusticus, a priest, and Eleutherius, a deacon.
Their ministry and preaching were powerful and fruitful. Eventually, they were arrested and imprisoned for a long period. They were finally martyred by beheading around the year 258.
A church was later built over their tomb in their honour.
According to tradition, after the executioner had cut off his head, Saint Denis bent down, picked it up, and walked toward the place where he was to be buried. This is why he is often represented in statues and sacred art holding his head in his hands.
The Church celebrates his feast on October 9.
